Lake Michigan’s Salmon and Trout Varieties
King (Chinook) Salmon
The undisputed heavyweight champion of Great Lakes salmon, Chinooks routinely reach 15-30 pounds in Door County and Algoma waters. These powerful fighters make blistering runs when hooked, testing both equipment and angler skill. Their deep silver flanks transform to dark maroon during spawning season, and males develop the characteristic hooked jaw. The Wisconsin state record stands at nearly 45 pounds!
Coho Salmon
Slightly smaller than their Chinook cousins but no less exciting, Coho salmon typically range from 5-12 pounds in Lake Michigan. Known for acrobatic fights with multiple jumps, Cohos provide non-stop action and are highly regarded for their delicious orange-red flesh. These silver bullets feature small black spots across their backs and upper tail fin.
Steelhead (Rainbow Trout)
While technically trout, steelhead behave like salmon and grow to impressive sizes in Lake Michigan. These chrome-bright fighters are famous for spectacular aerial displays when hooked. Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan strain frequently reaches 8-16 pounds.
Brown Trout
Lake Michigan’s brown trout population includes some genuine trophies exceeding 20 pounds. These golden-bronze predators cruise nearshore waters, especially during spring and fall, providing excellent opportunities for anglers.
The Trolling Experience
Unlike river fishing for spawning salmon, Lake Michigan charters employ specialized trolling techniques to cover water and intercept actively feeding fish:
- Downriggers: Heavy weights carry lures to precise depths where salmon hold along temperature breaks
- Copper/Lead Core Lines: Specialized weighted lines present baits at varied depths throughout the water column
- Planer Boards: These devices spread lures away from the boat, allowing multiple presentations without tangling
- Flasher/Fly Combos: Rotating flashers create vibration and flash that trigger reaction strikes from predatory salmon
Our vessels are fully equipped with all necessary specialized gear – just bring appropriate clothing and your fishing license!
