Lake Michigan’s Salmon and Trout Varieties

King (Chinook) Salmon

The undisputed king of Lake Michigan — the Chinook salmon is the fish that puts Algoma and Sturgeon Bay on the map for serious Great Lakes anglers. King salmon off the Algoma and Door County shoreline regularly reach 20 to 30+ pounds, with Wisconsin state record fish approaching 45 pounds caught right here in these waters. These powerful fish make blistering runs that test your tackle and your nerves — there is nothing in freshwater fishing quite like a big Chinook on the line in 150 feet of Lake Michigan water. King salmon are available from June through September, with peak fishing typically occurring in July and August when large schools stage off Algoma and Sturgeon Bay.

Coho Salmon

Slightly smaller than their Chinook cousins but no less exciting, coho salmon typically range from 5 to 12 pounds in Lake Michigan and provide some of the most action-packed fishing of the season. Coho are acrobatic fighters known for multiple aerial jumps that make every hookup a spectacle. Their delicious orange-red flesh makes them outstanding table fare — many anglers consider coho the best eating fish in the Great Lakes. Coho fishing off Algoma and Sturgeon Bay is excellent from May through August, with early season coho providing fantastic action while the king salmon season is building.

Steelhead (Rainbow Trout)

Steelhead — the rainbow trout of Lake Michigan — are pound-for-pound one of the most spectacular fighters in freshwater fishing. Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan steelhead regularly reach 8 to 16 pounds and are famous for their explosive aerial displays when hooked. These chrome-bright fish provide outstanding action throughout the summer season off Algoma and Sturgeon Bay, often mixed in with the king and coho bite during productive trolling sessions.

Brown Trout

Lake Michigan’s brown trout are some of the largest in the world — genuine trophy fish that can exceed 20 pounds and provide the fishing experience of a lifetime. These golden-bronze predators cruise the nearshore waters off Algoma and Sturgeon Bay, particularly in spring and fall when cooler temperatures bring them into accessible depths. Algoma is specifically known as one of the premier brown trout ports on Lake Michigan, with multiple Wisconsin state record brown trout having been caught in these waters. If a trophy brown trout is your goal, you’re in exactly the right place.

Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing Calendar: When To Book Your Algoma & Sturgeon Bay Charter

SPRING — MAY & JUNE: COHO SALMON AND EARLY KINGS Spring is when Lake Michigan comes alive off Algoma and Sturgeon Bay. Coho salmon are the primary target in May and early June, providing fast and furious action for anglers of all experience levels. Coho in the 5 to 12-pound range are common, and the near-shore bite can be absolutely spectacular in calm spring conditions. As June progresses, the first king salmon begin showing up in fishable numbers, and the anticipation builds for the peak summer season. Brown trout are also excellent in spring, cruising the nearshore waters off Algoma in accessible depths before summer heat pushes them deep.

SUMMER — JULY & AUGUST: KING SALMON PEAK SEASON July and August represent the absolute peak of king salmon season off Algoma and Sturgeon Bay. Large schools of Chinook salmon in the 15 to 30+ pound range stage in the cold, deep waters of Lake Michigan, and Green Bay Trophy Fishing targets these giants with multiple downrigger and planer board setups designed to cover the water column and find the most actively feeding fish. These are the trips that produce the biggest fish of the year — the 25 and 30-pound kings that make Lake Michigan salmon fishing legendary. Coho and steelhead continue to provide excellent action throughout the summer season as well.

FALL — SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: STAGING KINGS AND TROPHY BROWNS Fall brings a spectacular end to the Lake Michigan salmon season as king salmon begin their spawning migration and stage in large numbers near the harbors of Algoma and Sturgeon Bay. Staging kings are aggressive, concentrated, and highly catchable — fall trips regularly produce incredible action with multiple large fish. Trophy brown trout return to nearshore waters as temperatures cool, making September and October one of the best times of year to target a genuine trophy brown trout in the 15 to 20-pound class. Green Bay Trophy Fishing runs charters through October — book your fall trip early as these dates fill up fast.

How We Catch Trophy Salmon on Lake Michigan: Proven Trolling Techniques

Lake Michigan salmon and trout fishing is a specialized trolling game that requires the right equipment, the right presentations, and the knowledge to put it all together — and Green Bay Trophy Fishing has been doing this for over 35 years on the Algoma and Sturgeon Bay waters. Our charter boats are fully rigged with everything needed to consistently put clients on fish.

  • Downriggers: Heavy weights carry lures to precise depths where salmon hold along temperature breaks
  • Copper/Lead Core Lines: Specialized weighted lines present baits at varied depths throughout the water column
  • Planer Boards: These devices spread lures away from the boat, allowing multiple presentations without tangling
  • Flasher/Fly Combos: Rotating flashers create vibration and flash that trigger reaction strikes from predatory salmon

The key to consistent success on Lake Michigan is knowing which presentation to run at which depth and speed on any given day — and that knowledge only comes from decades on the water. With 35+ years guiding on Algoma and Sturgeon Bay, Green Bay Trophy Fishing puts the right baits in the right places every single trip. All rods, reels, downriggers, and tackle are provided — just bring your Wisconsin fishing license and Great Lakes trout and salmon stamp, and we handle everything else.
